Core and box drills for concrete and masonry

A core drill bit cuts only the circumference of the hole and leaves the core standing. That saves so much power that an ordinary rotary hammer reaches diameters a solid bit has no chance of. What sits here is mainly box drills with an SDS-Plus or SDS-Max fitting, meant for back boxes, switch boxes and service penetrations in concrete, masonry and sand-lime brick.

Diameters run from around 50 mm to just over 100 mm, with working lengths up to 550 mm for a penetration through a full wall. The choice starts with the fitting on your machine: SDS-Plus for lighter rotary hammers, SDS-Max for heavy work.

Then look at the teeth. Carbide teeth are the norm for concrete with reinforcement set back from the surface, while continuous reinforcing steel asks for a different cutting solution. Check the centre drill and the adapter as well, because those decide whether a bit fits your machine and whether it stays in place as you start the hole. A separate centre drill is quickly replaced when the point wears, and the wider choice sits under drilling and punching.
